I have the late 2013 with the nVIDIA chipset and unless I am doing something like running Handbrake which sends all 8 CPU threads to almost 100% i never hear the fan. Since I'm incredibly sensitive to noise even the slightest fan noise drives me crazy, thus the question: how's the fan on the 15" MBPr with AMD GPU? And how's the one without the AMD GPU, is there any difference? I know for sure I won't need a dedicated GPU so I'm tempted to go with the base model with Intel IGP and a larger SSD since I will need both RAM and storage space for virtualization. I've had the first 13" MBPr model (2012) and was highly satisfied with it - the fan pretty much never kicked in. One question I do ask myself though is how bad the fan on the 15" model is, especially compared to the 13" MacBook Pro Retina. I haven't decided that yet since it depends on how often I will have to fly to Europe.
